Taggart Memorial Amphitheatre

The much-anticipated restoration of the Thomas Taggart Memorial in the heart of Riverside Regional Park is nearing completion and will be opening in Summer 2021. Built-in 1931 and named for former Indianapolis Mayor Thomas Taggart (1895-1901), the restoration is a creative reuse of this historical outdoor amphitheater.

In collaboration with Indy Parks, Indiana Landmarks, and the Indianapolis Shakespeare Company (Indy Shakes), through The Parks Alliance, this project is grounded in the decades-long efforts by neighbors and enthusiasts—known as the Taggart Task Force—bringing attention and resources to restoring this historic monument. The visionary masterplan for Riverside Regional Park, completed in 2017, envisioned The Taggart Memorial as a multi-purpose theater. The 2021 introductory season will include the first-ever Riverside High School graduation ceremony and Indy Shakes’ mainstage production of William Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, as well as a variety of additional performances to be announced.
