Numerous events and tributes around the nation took place to honor Malcolm X's 100th birthday. With a focus on Legacy, many events remembered Malcolm X's legacy by continuing his mission for Black liberation and equality. The Indianapolis community gathered at the Riverside Community Center, where Mayor Hogsett and the City-County Council presented the Proclamation “Celebrating the 100th Birthday of El Hajj Malik El-Shabazz.” Special recognition and honor were presented to longstanding community activists and educators, Brother Kamau Jywanza and his late wife, Queen Mother Marshariki.
Social Media also welcomed a space for the renowned Statesman. On May 19, Malcolm X's actual birthday, the Charles H. Wright Museum shared a special behind-the-scenes tribute on social media platforms.
Community celebrations took place nationwide. Several events took place in Harlem, where Malcolm X centered much of his work, including music, poetry, and other artistic performances.
Many calls for Justice: Some events, like the one at the NAN House of Justice, also included calls for justice and accountability, particularly regarding Malcolm X's assassination and the ongoing fight for economic justice.
