Men’s health encompasses more than just physical strength. It’s about heart health, cancer screening, mental well-being, and a healthy lifestyle, to name a few. Many men overlook essential aspects of preventive care, putting themselves at higher risk for chronic conditions.

Routine medical check-ups can significantly improve your health. Here are some facts to get you started:

Heart disease remains the leading cause of death among men worldwide. Risk factors include high blood pressure, high cholesterol, smoking, and a sedentary lifestyle.

Routine visits to your provider can reveal these risks. Moderate exercise of at least 150 minutes per week, a low-fat, low-cholesterol diet, and stress management are just a few ways to help reduce your risk. Be aware of symptoms such as chest pain, shortness of breath, nausea, or fatigue, which may precede a heart attack.

Prostate cancer is one of the most common cancers in men, particularly over the age of 50. Screening typically involves a blood test called prostate-specific antigen (PSA). The screening decision is usually based on age, family history, and overall health. Colon cancer screening begins at 45 with a colonoscopy or stool test called Cologuard. When caught early, there is reduced mortality from this disease. Talk with your doctor about the risks and benefits of screening.

There is a stigma around mental health when it comes to men, who are less likely to seek help. This often leads to conditions like depression, anxiety, and substance abuse remaining untreated. It is important to have open conversations, seek professional support when needed, and stay socially connected for mental well-being.

Delaying this care can lead to difficulties in your work, relationships, stress levels, and happiness. For assistance from a mental health care provider, call Sandra Eskenazi Mental Health Center at 317-880-8491. For mental health emergencies, call 317-880-8485 or dial or text the National Lifeline at 988.

Quality sleep and regular exercise are important aspects of a healthy lifestyle. Men need 7-9 hours of sleep. Good sleep and regular exercise help with obesity, reduce cardiac risks, and improve mental health. Speak with your health care provider to establish a good routine.

This month, focus on working with your health care provider to learn more about your general health, your risks, screening tests, and goals to improve your health. Contact your health care provider for an appointment or find one at Eskenazi Health Connections (317-880-7666).
