Community Corner "TRANSITIONS IN GOVERNMENT"

By Carolyn Watts, Resident of Northwest Planners

Story Cont. "Transitions In Government"

It was an eventful day at the polls. It was exciting to see all the first-time

voters. Young people are excited to provide their input into our country’s

government. It was also disappointing to have individuals we had to turn

away. We had individuals who had registered after the deadline for this

election. One who had come with his mother had only registered to vote

that morning. This made them ineligible to vote. A few did not know that

they could only vote in person in their Indiana county of residence.

A potential voter had an out-of-state driver’s license who thought that was all

he needed to vote. It was shared that some had registered to vote at

agencies designated to do so. When called to verify, we were told that

these agencies had failed to fulfill their obligation to submit the applications.

The number of people who were unable to vote at our location was

disheartening. Multiplying this throughout the city, county, state, and nation

resulted in many lost opportunities.

What can we do? Check your voter status in advance. Have someone to

help you?
