Transitional Housing… A Neighborhood Concern

The Near Northwest (NNW) is in the process of purchasing new housing in one of our neighborhoods. Last year, the transitional housing for families with services had a Variance Hearing.

While this is good news, there is a serious concern for those currently wanting to rent in our area. In recent conversations, potential renters have been following various leads for housing. The landlord and/or leasing agent require that the individual submit a nonrefundable fifty ($50.00) fee to view the property and run a credit check. The results have not been positive for most.

Fair Housing Center of Central Indiana (FHCCI) is evaluating tenant screening. They are looking for those who have encountered barriers while seeking housing. Have you been denied "due to your credit scores, eviction history, and/or criminal record?"

Please contact fhcci.org. Their website has a report with comments concerning housing from those who have experienced barriers.

No Way Home: Tenant Screening Barriers to Housing

Local television ran a story about housing being bought by investors in April. An FHCCI study has shown that mega investors are purchasing single-family homes in lower-income communities. These investors tend not to make repairs and evict tenants at a higher rate.

What is the solution? I cannot tell you. However, we should attend our NNW Housing Committee Meetings and follow the FHCCI newsletter.
