The Indianapolis Department of Public Works (DPW) is converting 29th and 30th Streets from White River to Central Avenue to two-way streets. This project, from early 2025 to late 2026, aims to improve livability and accessibility in the Near Northwest Communities.
Background Information
One-way streets were initially designed to maximize freeway access and facilitate suburban commuting. However, they often increase vehicle speeds and reduce pedestrian safety.
Pros and Cons of Two-Way Conversions
The conversion to two-way streets offers several benefits:
• Traffic Calming: Reduced traffic speeds lead to safer streets.
• Improved Mobility: Direct routing simplifies travel within the neighborhood.
• Pedestrian Safety: Drivers must look both ways, increasing pedestrian visibility.
• Economic Development: Walkable neighborhoods attract businesses and residents.
These changes might reduce network throughput by 2-5% due to signal inefficiencies and fewer turn lanes.
Community Impact
Examples from Central Avenue show that two-way streets reduce vehicle-pedestrian conflicts and improve storefront exposure. Research indicates these conversions enhance neighborhood livability by reducing crime and boosting property values and business revenues. Similar projects in Fargo, ND, and Clemson University, SC, have spurred economic growth and increased pedestrian activity.
Public Involvement
Since 2021, community talks and public hearings have allowed residents to voice concerns and stay informed. The December 13, 2021, public meeting was crucial for community engagement. We encourage residents to stay involved and help shape this transformation. For more information, contact the Project Manager at Indianapolis DPW or visit the city’s website.
Together, we can make the Near Northwest Communities safer and more vibrant.
Let’s embrace these changes and work together to enhance our community!
